Last week was a momentous occasion for Corvette enthusiasts when the 2023 Corvette Z06 was spied on the Nürburgring, which only wore a camouflage film instead of the heavy black fairing we’ve only seen it in so far. These spy photos have given us the best view of the upcoming sports car yet.
So imagine our surprise when rumors began to circulate that the prototype would make a surprise visit to the Corvette Racing paddock at Circuit de la Sarthe during practice over the weekend leading up to the Le Mans 24 Hours. We first got wind of the C8 Z06 in France through Tommy Milner from Corvette Racing, who wrote an Instagram story about it. While hiding the C8 Z06 parked side by side with the C8.R, he provided a couple of close-ups showing the camouflage sheet and a headlight.
Shortly afterwards a photo of the professional photographer Kristof Vermeulen made the rounds and so we turned to him and these five photos of the C8 Z06 with the C8.R and Corvette Racing driver Jordan Taylor, who was standing in front of the car, licensed his Dale Earnhardt tribute helmet on.
We don’t yet know why the car is at Le Mans, but it looks like it was staged for a photoshoot, or maybe Chevrolet will offer Part III of the Mid-Engine Revolution documentary once the car is official Approved.
But if you look at the two cars together, you can see that the C8.R and Z06 are closely related to the large angular side intake vanes and aerodynamics. Both cars share a 5.5-liter V8 with a flat crank and a redline over 8000 rpm, so the Z06 is actually a street-based racing car, or as Alexander Rossi put it, “… the C8 racing car without a sticker”.
If we read from our comments, we know that many of you are very excited about what you see, and so are we. GM will officially unveil the all-new Z06 sometime this fall, and production will begin sometime in 2022.
